As the summer season wraps up, music enthusiasts are left pondering about the defining song of summer 2023. The criteria for this can vary, ranging from popularity on streaming platforms, virality on TikTok, to ubiquity on radio airwaves.
On September 5, Billboard released their Top Songs Of The Summer 2023 list, which takes into account all these factors, specifically chart data from June 10 to September 9.
Gunna, who made a musical comeback this year after being released from jail on racketeering charges, secured the 10th spot with his latest single, “F*kumean.” His return has been met with mixed reactions.
SZA’s hit singles, “Kill Bill” and “Snooze,” claimed the 9th and 8th spots respectively. Taylor Swift also had two songs in consecutive positions. Her remix of “Karma,” featuring Ice Spice, landed at No. 7, while “Cruel Summer,” originally released in 2019 on her seventh studio album, Lover, took the 6th spot.
The collaboration between Lil Durk and J. Cole, “All My Life,” came in at No. 5. Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers,” released earlier in January, continues to be a summer anthem and secured the 4th position. The 3rd spot was taken by Rema’s remix of “Calm Down,” featuring Selena Gomez.
Country music dominated this summer with Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” at No. 2. Topping the list was Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night.”
