The so-called “Drake Curse” is known for its inconsistent results, but when it strikes, it strikes hard. This was particularly true for Drake’s wallet, which took a $500,000 hit due to a bet he made on Israel Adesanya’s UFC 293 match against Sean Strickland. Drake publicized his bet on Instagram, which was made through Stak, a company he has a $100 million/year endorsement deal with. He would have received a $920k payout if Adesanya had won.

However, both Drake and Adesanya were disappointed when Strickland defeated the Kiwi kickboxer with a 49-46 judges’ decision. This marked Adesanya’s second loss by judges’ decision, bringing his MMA record to 24-3 and costing him the UFC Middleweight Championship belt.

The Drake Curse’s track record is far from consistent. In June, Drake won over $2 million by backing the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Finals, after losing around $350,000 on a bet for the University of Connecticut in the NCAA National Tournament. His bet on Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup resulted in a $2,750,000 payout from a million-dollar bet. As the saying goes, you win some, you lose some. Drake has experienced both outcomes in his betting career, but it’s likely that fortunes will turn around for him and Adesanya soon.
