This week one of hip-hop’s longest-running fights erupted after Sean “Diddy” Combs – also known as Puff Daddy, also known as Love came to the Breakfast Club to offer a challenge to his critics. “Anybody that thinks I owe them something, show me the receipt and you’ll get paid within 24 hours,” he stated.

It took just a few minutes for the top ex- Bad Boy Records artist who claims Diddy has a debt to him, to respond. Mase who has recorded three songs as part of the Bad Boy banner and has claimed that Puff kept royalties from him for years, responded, declaring Diddy’s rant an act of sour grapes coming from Mase refusing to permit him to take the stage on Mase’s 3 Headed Monster Tour with Cam’ron and Jadakiss. The singer also suggested that “receipts” in question were found at Diddy’s mom Janice Combs’ house.

It’s quite dramatic, but still routine for these two who have been debating the same issue for over 20 years. What’s the story behind how the squabble with Diddy and Mase get started?

After Mase left the music industry in 1999 in order to move into the ministry, he came back twice — the first time in 2004 with his album Welcome Return that was a disappointment in comparison to his popular debut album Harlem World and the follow-up album Double Up and a second time in 2009, when he provided Diddy and his documents during the live radio interview in which he demanded to be let go of the Bad Boy agreement. Although Diddy signed the documents however, it was later discovered that they allowed Mase to be on songs alongside other artists; however, the rest of the time, he was legally bound by Bad Boy Records.

In the year 2012 Mase stated to fans that he had ended his agreement with Bad Boy, but since the time, he’s been out about his problems with Puff and wrote in a later deleted Instagram posting that Puff did not want to sell him the publishing rights from the three albums he released, despite the fact that Mase was willing to pay $2 million, which was the original advance of $20,000 from 1996. (This might be false because there’s been a lot of speculation that Mase had a contract for $250,000.) Mase also claimed Puff of having a hand in his performance at the Lovers & Friends Festival.

It’s funny that Mase herself was accused of infractions by a New York artist whose career was he attempted to jumpstart, Fivio Foreign. Although Mase was able to deny Fivio’s accusations however, it’s still unclear whether this incident has provided him a new understanding of Diddy’s perspective in their dispute. If so been a positive thing, it definitely did not make him more sympathetic to the former employer’s position.
