Humility is often seen as a key attribute for success, with many believing that it should be balanced with confidence while pride takes a backseat. This concept has been expressed in various ways throughout history. However, William Law perhaps put it best when he said humility is “nothing else but a right judgment of ourselves.”
In her new album, Jaguar II, Victoria Monét offers her own interpretation of self-judgment and her perception of the world. Interestingly, through the album’s 11 tracks, Monét sheds the humility that has characterized her over a decade-long career. Known for her songwriting for artists like Diddy, Ariana Grande, Chris Brown, Fifth Harmony, Chloe X Halle, Blackpink, and more, Monét has also been working on her own music. She expressed her desire to balance these two aspects of her career in a 2020 interview with Wonderland Magazine.
Successful songwriters often remain in the background, creating a disconnect between their work and their own releases. However, this has not been the case for Monét. Her 2020 EP Jaguar was a turning point, and her debut album Jaguar II is a testament to her growth as an artist. The album features tracks that showcase Monét’s confidence and talent, such as the Kaytranada-produced “Alright” and the uplifting “Party Girls.”
The album also takes a swipe at humility, with Monét asserting her self-confidence in tracks like “On My Mama.” She also challenges societal norms in “Cadillac (A Pimp’s Anthem)” and expresses frustration at unrealistic expectations in “Stop (Asking Me 4Shyt).” In “I’m The One,” she portrays herself as a flawless gem, perfect for a lover who fails to see her worth.
The boldness exhibited in Jaguar II is not new for Monét; it was also evident in Jaguar. However, Jaguar II refines this approach, showcasing her artistry more clearly than ever. With strong production support from D’Mile, who has worked with artists like Ty Dolla Sign, Snoh Aalegra, Lucky Daye, HER, Mary J. Blige, Silk Sonice, and more, Monét had all the necessary tools to create the excellent Jaguar II.
Jaguar II is now available via RCA Records/Lovett Music, Inc. More information can be found here.
