The feud between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, as well as their husbands, Offset and Kenneth Petty, is heating up again after a few years of relative calm. If you’re curious about how this all began, Uproxx has compiled a timeline of the feud’s origins and developments. We’ll focus on the facts, leaving speculation aside.
The Start of the Feud – 2017
Our original timeline of the Nicki/Cardi feud suggests that it all started with the release of Cardi’s “Bodak Yellow”. The song became a sensation, making Cardi the first solo female rapper to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” – a feat Nicki had been chasing for nearly ten years.
However, even before “Bodak Yellow” reached its peak, Nicki Minaj’s fans, the Barbz, started throwing shade at Cardi. This was three years after Nicki’s last album release. Whether the Barbz saw Cardi as a threat to Nicki’s reign or just wanted to stir up drama, they got their wish when attempts at solidarity between the two women backfired.
The Escalation – 2017 – 2018
In October 2017, Migos added Cardi B to their Culture II single, “Motorsport.” This move sparked further conflict. After the song’s video was released in November, rumors of drama between Nicki and Cardi began to circulate. The fact that their scenes were shot separately, and that Migos added Cardi without consulting Nicki, fueled speculation of a rift. When it was revealed that Cardi’s label, Atlantic, had allegedly requested changes to Nicki’s verse, the feud escalated.
In April 2018, while promoting her album Queen, Nicki started openly criticizing Cardi in interviews. She accused Cardi of being “ungrateful” and not supporting her explanation for their separate shoot days, which she attributed to a scheduling conflict with her hairstylist.
The feud reached a boiling point in September 2018, when a physical altercation occurred between the two at a New York Fashion Week party. Cardi threw a shoe at Nicki and ended up with a bump on her forehead from one of Nicki’s bodyguards. Since then, the feud has cooled down somewhat, with both sides resorting to less overt hostilities.
