On this day in 2000, Bad Boy Records premiere artist Jamal “Shyne” Barrow released his debut album, self-titled, on the popular Bad Boy imprint under the direction of the BB honcho, who was then also known as “P. Diddy.”

Shyne’s debut album was bittersweet as his album was taken down while the Belize-born rapper was serving between 8 and 10 years in an upstate prison following an incident at Club New York in Manhattan within a year of his former boss and girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. Even with Barrow being sentenced to prison time the album was a resounding hit, having sold more than one million copies in less than an entire year. It was also a huge aid that the voice of Shyne was almost identical to the slain Bad Boy artist Notorious B.I.G.

With the album’s content centered around Shyne’s real life gangster image the top two singles of the album, “Bad Boyz”, that features reggae’s legendary Barrington Levy, and the romantic thug love story “Bonnie And Shyne”, weren’t just popular on the streets as well, but also hit their best on the air and were being played on the radio across the nation.

A big thank you thanks to Diddy, Shyne and the rest of the Bad Boy staff for bringing the world an iconic Hip Hop classic!
